Malachite

You ever pick up a stone and just… get lost in it? That’s how I feel every time I hold malachite. Those deep, swirling greens pull me right in, like I’m looking down at a forest from the clouds, or following the twists and turns of a river on an old map. It’s mesmerizing. But malachite isn’t just pretty—it’s one of those stones that means business. It’s bold, protective, and it doesn’t tiptoe around change.

Malachite has been loved for centuries—thousands of years, actually. The ancient Egyptians powdered it for pigments and kept it close as a talisman. In the Middle Ages, people wore it to guard against the “evil eye,” and some believed it would break or crumble to warn its wearer of danger. Even now, witches and energy workers see it as a guardian, a stone that pushes you toward transformation whether you feel ready or not. It’s like that no-nonsense friend who loves you too much to let you stay stuck.

The energy of malachite is strong and very direct. It’s protective, shielding you from negativity and even psychic attack, but it also calls you out on the patterns and habits that aren’t serving you. It can pull up emotional stuff you didn’t even know you were holding onto, and while that can feel intense, it’s all in service of clearing the way for growth. It also amplifies energy—good or bad—so it’s one of those stones you want to work with intentionally, making sure your head and heart are in a good space when you do.

From a witchy perspective, malachite feels very earthy, but there’s a little fire in there too—the spark that drives transformation. It’s tied to Venus, so there’s also a connection to love, beauty, and harmony. If you’re into astrology, it tends to vibe really well with Scorpio, Capricorn, and Taurus energy. It’s a heart chakra stone at its core, but I also use it for the solar plexus when I’m working on confidence, courage, and boundaries. Witches often keep it on the altar to boost spellwork, tuck a piece into their travel bag for safe journeys, or even use it for scrying when they’re seeking truth.

In Reiki, malachite is such a powerful ally. I’ll place it over the heart chakra to open and protect the emotional body, especially if someone’s moving through grief or heartbreak. On the solar plexus, it can spark willpower and personal strength. Because it amplifies energy, I often pair it with something softer—like rose quartz—to balance that intensity and make the experience gentler.

And then there’s wearing malachite, which is one of my favorite ways to keep its energy close. It’s stunning as jewelry—those green patterns draw people in without fail. If you want to focus on heart healing or emotional support, a pendant near your chest works beautifully. For courage and willpower, a bracelet or a ring on your right hand gives it that little extra boost. And for travel protection, I like to keep a small polished piece in my bag or pocket.

One very important thing to know: raw malachite contains copper and can be toxic if the dust is inhaled or ingested. So you never want to use it in a crystal elixir, and you should wash your hands after handling rough pieces. Polished malachite is safe to touch and wear, and it’s usually what you’ll see in jewelry.

The thing about malachite is that it’s not always gentle, but that’s what makes it so powerful. It’s here to protect you, to help you shed what no longer serves you, and to walk with you into the version of yourself you’ve been waiting to become. Whether you keep it on your altar, wear it daily, use it in healing work, or just keep a small piece nearby, it’s a constant reminder that growth and change are worth the effort.

So tell me—do you have a piece of malachite yet? And if you do… has it been whispering to you to make some changes?
